Learning English/French together with Nice as our classroom
A room with a view
Sometimes I find myself teaching English in offices or meeting rooms that are functional and reasonably well equipped. They’re fine for focused work — exercises, grammar drills, nuts and bolts. But when it comes to inspiring conversation or bringing good energy into group discussion, these spaces can make things harder for both teachers and learners.
In my previous blog, I talked about the wonders of walking for this very reason. When we move, when we’re in stimulating environments, conversation flows more naturally.
The new membership
That’s why I’m so excited to finally offer adult language learners in Nice a new way to practise English or French — in a far more conducive atmosphere: out and about in Nice.
Every month is different. We explore new places, enjoy a drink in a café, or discover something unique about the city. It’s ideal for anyone who can already hold a basic conversation but wants to:
- expand vocabulary
- build confidence in speaking and understanding
- experience real-life language use
Each month has a theme, and members are encouraged to set:
- one personal SMART objective (something specific they’d like to improve or correct)
- one group objective (something to achieve together).
Resources are provided at the start of the month for those who want to prepare around the theme and feel ready for the activities.

What are Explore & Discover activities?
Each month includes four meet-ups:
- Week 1 & 4 → friendly exchanges (Walk & Talk or café conversation, depending on the weather)
- Weeks 2 & 3 → Explore & Discover activities with a local community focus
Explore & Discover means immersive outings where we get curious about Nice: its culture, history, food, people, and stories. Always linked to the monthly theme, these experiences bring language alive in unexpected and memorable ways.
Coming up this autumn
- October → Meet the Street • La Rue Vous Rencontre: a one-street mini-tour where we meet entrepreneurs, creatives, and volunteers who bring a quartier to life. They share their stories in English and French, we chat, and discover what makes the street buzz.
Find out more about Meet the Street – including the 2023 Rue Vernier edition - November → Our Tour: 2 part activity where we devise our own DIY neighbourhood tour. Members each research a spot and share what they’ve found — informative, creative, and/or fun!
- December → Making Sense: exploring Nice through a single sense. Will it be sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch? Expect surprises!
Instead of classroom role-plays and scripted listening tasks, these are real experiences, spontaneous and unpredictable. Doing this as a bilingual group reduces the fear of encountering new situations in another language. We support each other and enjoy sharing something unique.
Why it helps language learning
As I mentioned in my previous blog, inspired by Shane O’Mara’s In Praise of Walking, our brains fire up when we move or step into new environments. Our senses are heightened, we’re alert, and ready to react.
For language learning, this is perfect. Real life is not laid out like a chapter in a course book — it’s full of surprises. By exploring together, our brains make stronger connections. We find ways to express ourselves, even if we don’t know the exact word. Perfection is no longer the goal; the goal is connection. And because we’re doing this as a group, everyone contributes and supports each other equally.
